The Shell Technology Center – Americas is one of many engineering projects completed by the ccrd team that is expected to be LEED® certified. This facility is anticipating LEED® Silver Certification.

As Shell Oil Company’s Research and Development center for North and South America, ccrd has provided the Lead Laboratory Engineering Design for approximately 595,519 sf of renovated laboratory building and 180,000 sf of new advanced research laboratory building. The laboratories house incubator projects, joint venture projects with relocated companies, start-up analysis, and forensic research areas.

The buildings are part of a 450 acre site in west Houston which takes advantage of a central utility plant utility distribution system for energy conservation.

ccrd provided lead mechanical, electrical and plumbing design specialty fields of engineering for the Shell Westhollow Technology Center laboratory project.

These new facilities will allow Shell to continue to be a world leader in energy research and development as well as provide a first class working environment for their employees.

The project consists of approximately 225,000 square feet of laboratory and support space. Approximately half the square footage is in buildings that were completely gutted and re-worked. Ancillary spaces such as bottle yards and material handling areas are also a part of the project. These laboratories support research in many areas of Shell’s business model including chemicals and refining as well as exploration and production.

In addition to improving the research capabilities of the facility the project will also provide increased energy efficiency by replacing outdated and wasteful ventilation systems with state of the art laboratory ventilation and control strategies.

Collaborating with the architectural team at Kirksey made this Science and Technology project a labor of love and another example of art meeting engineering.
